The methodology for the "Best Law Firms" metropolitan lists involved surveying thousands to compile research in 81 practice groups for 171 different areas and seven states.  To be eligible for one of the metropolitan rankings, such as Dallas or Houston, a firm had to have at least one attorney recipient among their "Best Lawyers in America" list. The national lists, however, cover 39 practice groups and to qualify for this ranking, a firm had to have in office in one of their 40 metropolitan areas surveyed.
