Costly Mistakes

FOREIGN NATIONALS STARTING U.S. BUSINESSES ARE MAKING COSTLY MISTAKES

Lack of planning and an inadequate understanding of U.S. rules can dramatically reduce the odds for success, says Silicon Valley-based financial advisor

FREMONT, California -- Although many government’s policies around the world discourage offshore investors, the largest economy in the world still remains relatively open to foreign investment. A growing number of new U.S. businesses—especially start-ups in the technology sectors—are being started by foreigners.

Driving that trend even harder will be the coming void that is expected to be created in the work force by exiting boomers in the next decade. According to Deloitte, over the next 15 years 80 percent of the U.S. work force will be retiring. Who better to fill that void than foreign talent and entrepreneurs?

In many cases, these highly motivated new U.S. business owners are less wise to the ways of doing business here, and may not spend the proper time thinking out issues that can affect their future financial success. Even seemingly obvious issues such as whether or not to set up residency here in the US can present taxing problems...

DTE Goes From Strength to Strength

DTE Goes From Strength to Strength

Powerful growth of 19 per cent means professional services group DTE , TIAG's Manchester-based member firm, is the sixth fastest growing accountancy firm in the UK - including the 'Big 4' international firms.

A sharp rise in DTE's fee income - from £15m last year to £18m in 2007 - has moved the nationally-based group from 29th to 26th position in the national 'Premier League' of accountancy firms, compiled by trade title 'Accountancy Age'.

DTE, which has offices in Manchester, London, Birmingham, Bury, Blackburn, and Wolverhampton, also generated higher fee income per partner (£1.6m) than all but five UK accountancy firms.

Managing Partner Keith Train comments: "These figures reflect an excellent year at DTE and a magnificent effort by our professionals in all departments.

"After breaking into the UK top 30 for the first time in 2006, it would have been easy to have taken our foot off the pedal, but it is extremely pleasing to report that the opposite happened."

DTE's best performing division was Corporate Finance which chalked up fee income growth of 60 per cent, while Tax, Audit and Corporate Recovery all recorded increases of 20 per cent or higher.

Train adds: "We will continue to pursue our strategy of internal expansion by developing our people and recruiting talented individuals, as well as external growth by acquisition, as opportunities arise."

Birthplace of Central American Independence

Many people around the world identify Paul Revere's ride as the start of the USA's War of Independence.  And quite a few know that the ride started after receiving a signal from the steeple of Boston's Old North Church.  But fewer know that the movement for Central America's independence movement also started with a signal from a church.  On November 5, 1811, a Salvadoran priest named  José Matías Delgado rang the bells of the Iglesia La Merced in San Salvador, sounding the call to the insurrection which culminated in the independence of Central America from the Spanish Empire a decade later.

Central America's smallest nation (about the size of Massachusetts) has suffered a great deal of turbulence in the intervening years but has achieved a surprising degree of stability in the past decade and a half.  The US dollar has become the currency, the country has joined the Central American Free Trade Area (CAFTA), and industrial diversification is now augmenting if not replacing the traditional reliance on the coffee export economy.

It is in this encouraging environment that Contadores Publicos Asociados SA de CV (CPA) has become the latest addition to the TIAG alliance.  CPA is located in La Libertad, not far from El Salvador's American Embassy.  Its partners include a past president of the Corporacion de Contadores de El Salvador, a professor of finance at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas, and a consultant to the International Trade Center (UNTACD/WTO).

Vietnam's Economic Grand Slam
Leads Thang Long to Join TIAG

In November 2006, Vietnam enjoyed four economic triumphs.  Leading off was accession to the World Trade Organization, followed by hosting the APEC Summit Meeting.  Then came the news that Intel was to build a billion-dollar assembly and test facility there.  Rounding out these events was the nomination of Vietnam to become a member of the UN Security Council in 2008.  With these symbols of Vietnam's emergence as a growing economic presence, it was natural to seek a member firm for TIAG there, and TIAG is happy to announce that the Thang Long Auditing Company, home based in Hanoi, has  become the 87th member of the alliance.

A young firm, Thang Long has demonstrated a remarkable growth pattern, becoming one of Vietnam's largest independent accounting firm in just five years.  . With more than 40 professional staff in its Hanoi office and 30 more in two representative offices outside of Hanoi, Thang Long Auditing Company provides a full range of professional services including audit, accounting, tax, corporate secretarial and business consultancy. Its clientele includes major industry leaders in manufacturing, construction, telecommunications, computers, advertising, food, healthcare and trading.
